U.S. General McAuliffe 101st Airborne, 1944-45

General McAuliffe was a senior United States Army Officer who earned fame as the acting commander of the 101st Airborne division during the Battle of the Bulge. He is celebrated for his one-word reply of “Nuts!” to a German surrender ultimatum. Following the war, McAuliffe held many positions including Chief Chemical Officer of the Army Chemical Corps and Head of Army Personnel. In 1953 he returned to Europe as commander of the 7th Army and Commander-in-Chief of the United States Army Europe in 1955 when he was promoted to four-star general.
